Feature Article:

Mastering Your Best?

I was recently a part of a discussion that made me think about the roles that competence, excellence and mastery play in our business and our lives.
Let’s take a deeper look at these ideals.

Competency. Competency is simply the bare minimum that is needed to accomplish the task at hand. It requires no creativity, initiative, thoughtfulness, competitiveness or even very much effort. In most cases, being competent is just enough to prevent you from being fired and may also keep your business profitable enough to stay afloat. For better or worse, most people who are unsatisfied with their business and careers settle for being merely competent.

Excellence. Excellence is what occurs when competition enters the picture. The goal is often to win, be known as the best and/or achieve some level of recognition. Excellence is an ideal that allows you to enjoy a sense of accomplishment along with the fruits of your labor. People enjoy (at some level) what they do and the rewards it brings them, providing motivation to strive for excellence.

Mastery. Mastery represents an extraordinarily high level of achievement that literally means that you have accomplished all there is to accomplish within an industry or field. It represents the very best that you have to offer. The “pursuit of mastery” is a lifelong journey that is as internally fulfilling as it is outwardly laudable. Only those who have a deep love and connection for what they hope to achieve can make the commitment to pursue mastery, as it represents a commitment and dedication that very few people are willing to pursue. When mastery is our goal, we can be certain that we are living and working on our divinely ordered path of purpose.

Moving from Competence to Mastery. Making the shift from competence to mastery requires you to do three things.

1. Take a hard look at your profession and determine if what you are doing in your business or career energizes you (if the big pictures does not excite and energize you - make plans to transition to something that does);

2. Break out the elements of your business or career that drain your energy and outsource them or design a systematic way to get these things done efficiently so you can move on to high-impact and energizing activities (visit our blog at www.inspirebyaction.com for tips about outsourcing and creating systems); and

3. Determine what you really enjoy about your business and/or profession and create a plan to master these elements. Once you create an action plan with S.M.A.R.T. goals ~ work your plan with focused consistency.
